The Hobbit Question 1 March 2, 2011 One point in the story I thought it showed really good conflict and kept making me turn the pages was in chapter 5 Riddles In the Dark. In this chapter Bilbo, the hobbit, wakes up from hitting his head. He finds him self in a dark tunnel by a lake. He walks to the water and that is when he meets Gollum. Gollum is described as being as dark as darkness, except for two big pale eyes with a thin face. Gollum is sick of eating fish so he invites Bilbo to a riddle competition. Gollum has lived for a very long time and is super good at riddles, so if Bilbo can trick Gollum into answering a question wrong he will live and Gollum will show him the way out. The first few Bilbo askes, Gollum gets right. Then, Bilbo trys to trick him into saying "Whats in my pocket?" Gollum gets confused and infuriated furiated and gusses three times. Each one he gets wrong. Bilbo then keeps bothering Gollum about showing him the way out ,but Gollum thinks that Bilbo cheated. Gollum then gives up and goes to his island, but realizes his ring is missing. He turns to Bilbo and askes him what he does have in his pocket. Bilbo gets scared and starts running. Before, Bilbo could even breath he sees Gollum on him. Gollum acts like Bilbo isn't even under him. Bilbo notices the ring on his finger and he turned invisible.Gollum keeps running ahead of him swearing and talking to him self while Bilbo lays on the ground. He follows Gollum and ends up at the passage way to the exit. He jumps over Gollum and before Gullom could clasps his hnds on Bilbo, he clasps air. Bilbo looks back at the poor creature. They had very keen eyesight and heard the Wargs yelping. The eagles arrived and so did the goblins! The goblins thought it was a meeting going on. Goblins do not like Eagles at all. When the goblins arrived, they laughed at how stupid the wolves looked running around. They put leaves by trees hopeing they will set on fire. they sung a horrible song to the eagles ( on pg 116) and in return Gandalf replied, "Go away! Little boys who play with fire get punished!" The goblins thought the eagles answerd and kept singing. Gandalf climbed to the top of the trees and the eagle picked him up and they dissapered. The other eagles picked up the Dwarves and Bilbo and flew away. Why did the eagles do this? That would be a good detail to add. Nice job! ~Mrs. Best

Bell Hurula 2/21/11 Question 3 In the story, "The Hobbit" Bilbo finds himself on a great adventure. He finds himself running from Wargs, talking with a bear-man, and killing great spiders. "Somehow the killing of the giant spider, all alone by himself in the dark without the help of the wizard or the dwarves or of anyone else, made a great difference to Mr. Baggins. He felt a different person, and mush fiercer and bolder in spite of an empty stomach, as he wiped his sword on the grass and put it back into its sheath."(170) This is textual evidence tht Bilbo's adventure made a difference to him. When I was 12 years old, my brother Dustin, my brother Josh, my brother's girl friend Linda, and I did research on a haunted area. My brother told me, that he was just recently to a haunted field, and that he wanted to see if I wanted to go with him somewhere to see if we can experience something paranormal. We looked at haunted roads, haunted fields, and haunted graveyards near Waukesha. On a website, we saw a link to a haunted graveyard four streets from where we were! Dustin clicked the link and it brought us to this spooky website. It had tales about weird things that happened there. One story said, that if you go there at night, you can see a weird white car slowly follow you when you leave. My brother and I wanted to see if this tale was true or not, so at 7:00 we all left to see if something weird would happen. I brought my video camera there to see if I can take some spooky pictures of the place and save them for memories. When we were one street away, I turned my video camera on and waited to drive up the dirt rode. As soon as the car got onto the rode my camera turned off on its own! It had full battery when i turned it on so I told my brother and his girlfriend what happened and they wouldn't believe me. I showed them and thats when the car went silent. We talked about going on or not, but it ended up that we did. It was foggy around all the graves but no where else. It looked like an episode of Scooby Doo! We were all scared to get out of the car, but my brother Dustin went first. I grabbed the car handle, and stepped out on to the muddy land. I went by my brother and felt a weird chill. We both ran back into the car and locked the doors! I told Linda to get us out of hear, and then she turned the car on. When we were driving away, we honestly saw a white car behind us! It followed us until we turned the street to head home. This experience made me braver because, I would never of thought that I could get out of the car after what I heard. After experiencing this, I could handle harder adventures then this one. ~Wow! This is quite an adventure! I would not have gone within five miles of the place! Too spooky!! Good connections to Mr. Bilbo Baggins! ~ Mrs. Best
